In the early 90's during my childhood my TV of choice was Nick at Nite. I preferred to watch classic television. Old favorites like Dragnet, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, The Carol Burnett Show - and of course The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
I was deeply saddened to hear of her passing today. She was one of my first feminist icons - out there making it on her own. You never know until later who or what will inform major parts of who you are. I solidly believe that watching women like her from an early age shaped me in a fundamental way.
All I can do is pass on the legacy. I'll introduce Tallulah to Mary when she is older, and teach her to be a strong woman who goes after what she wants in life without letting anything stand in her way (especially things like societal expectations and institutionalized patriarchy).
