I first noticed Michael on Instagram. I like to cruise our areas hashtags (#monroela #westmonroe #rustonla #sterlington) to see whats going on out in the community, and I noticed him there. Not him. He is not the 'account full of selfies' type. But he would post pictures of what he was workign on, of his RGHNCK tags out and about in town. I was interested in what he was doing.
One day he posted an image on Insta of one of my favorite location spots. An old dilapidated building. I commented on the photo and he replied that he is working on buying the property. At this point, I had always been curious about @rghnck_original , and now he slips me this nugget of information? I thought it was time I met him!
He was happy to meet up. I met with him on Antique Alley where he was working on his first large street mural. We talked about a pretty large range of topics - so much more than I would need to share here. He just was such an interesting and charismatic guy - I kept asking him questions! He was totally casual, painting away while he shared his story with me. I think it would take many, many posts to tell his WHOLE story, and honestly, I don't think I should share it all here. He is not afraid to speak his truth!
He does have amazing stories to tell; he is a veteran, he was homeless in Hawaii, he truly believes that the day he decided to live his life as a Christian he started seeing amazing changes - big changes. He did not grow up with any artistic inclinations. It was fairly recently that he started becoming interested and picked up some spray paints to get to work. He also screen prints. I could not believe that he was not a life long artistic creature. He just found himself it seems. And he dove all-in. When he wants to accomplish something, it gets done. I'm sure MANY of you have seen him recently with one of his newly released ventures - Ghost Tactical ( www.ghost-tactical.com ) - go read their story! They make cool things that I want you to go read about from them - AND GIVE BACK TO THE HOMELESS & DISENFRANCHISED. Showers, T-shirts, and aquaponic systems that can provide water, fresh veggies, and fresh fish. Now THAT part is what I call genius. So much better than dropping off a few gallons of water.
If you see Michael out and about, maybe get him a coffee and have a chat. He has quite the story, and nothing but big plans for the future.
